Game Freak has delivered mainline Pokemon RPG entries over the course of nine generations and seven Nintendo hardware platforms beginning in 1996. Pokemon Red and Blue began the franchise on the original Game Boy with 151 creatures and a turn-based monster-taming JRPG framework that set the standard for the genre. Pokemon Gold and Silver enhanced that framework on the Game Boy Color in 1999 with day-night cycles, breeding, and a dual-region adventure that spanned Johto and Kanto. Then in 2010 on the Nintendo DS, Pokemon Black and White pushed the narrative ambition further with a 156 creature regional Pokedex and the Team Plasma plot that questioned the morality of trainers and Pokemon. This is an extensive ranking for 2026 that will look at the ten mainline Pokemon RPG entries that defines the franchise’s three-decade catalogue in terms of mechanical depth, regional design, and cultural impact.

This ranking is based on three criteria. It must be a mainline turn-based Pokemon RPG that differentiates the entries from spin-offs such as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Pokemon Conquest, Pokemon Snap, and the action RPG hybrid Pokemon Legends Arceus. The mechanical depth must stand against current day expectations and offer a greater experience than just pre Nintendo Switch games. Lastly, the cultural impact must go beyond Pokemon's competitive community. Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver take the top spot because the 2009 Nintendo DS remakes offer the dual-region Johto and Kanto adventure, the ability to have walking Pokemon with the Pokewalker pedometer accessory, and the most complete Pokemon RPG experience the franchise has ever delivered.

The fifth generation of Pokémon games. Pokémon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2. Tell the most ambitious story in the entire franchise, and as such take the second spot. The Gold and Silver games take 3rd place because they added several features that changed how Pokémon games would be made from then onwards. In this case, the 2nd generation games for Game Boy Color also refined and evolved the genre Gaming Pokemon Black and White have a dual screen system, as well as a refined 2D presentation. 3D character models and stereoscopic graphics also play a large role in how the 6th and 7th generation of Pokémon games are made, as they are done on the 3DS. Finally, with the switch, we have open zone exploration with the Wild Area, which expanded how Pokémon games were made.

FireRed, LeafGreen, HeartGold, and SoulSilver all represent a remake of previous generations, and as such use the technology of the time to create new experiences from old ones. Looking at the history of Pokémon games in 2026, the above games are a great place to start. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

How We Ranked All Mainline Pokemon RPG Games

Our editors' methodology evaluates Pokemon RPG games based on three criteria. Each one reveals a different design strength. Starting with regional design and structural ambition, the strongest entries incorporate over-world geography along with town design, gym progression, and post-game content to create experiences that reward players for exploring all the different regions instead of just the critical path to complete the game. An example of this is Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver. It utilizes a dual region (Johto and Kanto) map which gives the player two complete Pokemon adventures on one cartridge. Another example is Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, which use a timeline shifted sequel structure to revisit the region of Unova two years after the events of the first two games. They also add new locations, new Pokemon, and the World Pokemon Tournament which features champions and Gym Leaders from across the franchise.

Depth of the narrative and the memorability of the antagonist is the second filter. The Black and White games, along with their sequels, stand out as having the most memorable antagonist in the form of N, whereas other anti-hero Team Plasma members question the morality of being a Pokemon Trainer and capturing Pokemon. The Alolan Trials format in Pokemon Sun and Moon replaces the traditional regional captain gym encounters and anti-hero Aether Foundation plot introduced corporate corruption into the franchise for the first time. In Pokemon Gold and Silver, the dual region structure provides the most narrative payoff and rewards players who complete the Johto region of the game with access to the Kanto region as post-game content.

Lastly, it is design evolution and the lasting influence on the genre that form the last filter.

Every entry has been recently evaluated against the standards of modern playability against 2026. Regarding entries which still stand up, we ranked highly even with the lack of modern advancements and conveniences for quality of life. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl introduced the physical-special split which redefined competitive battling for every generation after these. Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald introduced Abilities, Natures and double battles which became permanent mechanics of the franchise. Pokemon X and Y introduced Mega Evolution along with the Fairy type which rebalanced the type chart for the first time since Gen 2. Pokemon Sword and Shield introduced Dynamax along with the Wild Area open-zone format which broadened environmental design for the first time ever in the open Wild Area format. The foundational attributes of these new mechanics demonstrate the importance of each entry and how they contribute to the growth of the entire franchise over the last 30 years.

Game Freak's Pokemon Sword and Shield take the tenth spot because they are the franchise's first home-console main RPG and Game Freak's Switch debut. The Galar region has a unique design with an industrial revolution British countryside theme. Sword and Shield also have televised league event gym battles, and the Dynamax mechanic which allows players to battle giant Pokemon once during the battle and turn specific Pokemon into Power Spot ones. For the first time players can experience true open zone exploration in a Pokemon game with the Wild Area. The Galar Wild Area has towns, free camera control, different weathers, and various Pokemon spawns across the different Wild Area regions. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

In the beginning, Galar Pokedex had 400 Pokemon, and with the Crown Tundra and Isle of Armor DLC expansions added new regional forms and legendaries. The Dexit controversy divided the fanbase when Game Freak announced that not all previously released Pokemon would be in Sword and Shield and would not be able to be imported from Pokemon Home. The competitive battling community appreciated the streamlined Pokedex that allowed faster meta evolution. Pokemon Sword and Shield also formed the basis of the franchise's move to home console hardware, The Wild Area format was the basis for later games including Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's full implementation of open world.

Game Freak's 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes of the original Red and Blue Pokemon games, FireRed and LeafGreen, take the ninth spot. These games also set the standard for every remake to come for the franchise. Like the first games, FireRed and LeafGreen take place in the Kanto Region. Hoenn's Gen 3 standards were introduced in this remaking along with weather effects and day-night cycles (Gen 2). There were also changes based off the Physical/Special split (Gen 4) mechanics. Additionally, these games included post-game content in the Sevii Islands that expanded the areas you could play in. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

Players could completely integrate their Hoenn region Pokemon into Kanto teams as they possessed the 386 creature Hoenn Pokedex. The Sevii Islands added seven islands east of Kanto where players could encounter exclusive Pokémon and participate in gym-like challenges. The wireless adapter made Pokemon multiplayer available for the first time. Players could battle and trade without using the link cable from the Game Boy Color era. FireRed and Leaf Green established the formula later used in HeartGold and SoulSilver, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee, and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl to use older generations and give them a fresh interpretation. The 2004 GBA remakes still have the original Pokemon adventures. They also proved that modernizing the original games is possible.

The Pokemon games, Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, are considered one of the greatest uses of the Nintendo DS. The split between physical and special attacks would be the greatest change for competitive play throughout Pokemon history. Every previous game before Diamond and Pearl, had moves grouped into a category based on type. For example, all fire type moves were considered special attacks while all rock type moves were considered physical moves. The games changed how moves were grouped in order to create hundreds of new competitive strategies that were previously locked because of type-based move grouping. The Sinnoh region has many mountains with a giant one named Mount Coronet, there are also the Spear Pillar and Distortion World postgame that have some of the most creative locations in the franchise.

Pokemon Diamond and Pearl were released to many technical problems with the battle animations being slow and the regional Pokedex being small. Platinum, which released a year later, expanded the regional Pokedex by 59 Pokemon, redesigned the Distortion World to be an alternate dimension dungeon, and changed the battle speed to make the game faster to play. The DS hardware enabled faster move selection and made gameplay smooth. Pokemon Platinum ended up being the first game to introduce many systems that future generations would keep and has the most improved experience overall from the first set of games. Because of this, the 2021 remakes Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl keep the original experience however, Platinum still is the better game to have in order to have the best experience in Sinnoh. Game Freak’s releases for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013 include Pokemon X and Y, the first fully 3D Pokemon games, marking a full transition into 3D character modeling and the ability to go into stereoscopic depth. Set in a region based on the geography of France, the Kalos region includes the first actual city with an urban layout, Lumiose City. It's packed with district areas, side quests, and shops scattered throughout the city in addition to the Gym Leader battles. Mega Evolutions changed the competitive battling landscape, allowing for a Pokemon to gain a stat increase (known as a “Mega Evolution”) and temporarily become more powerful than other Pokemon species. This meant that Pokemon like Mawile, Houndoom, and Banette, which were considered under-preformed prior to this change could now be more usable. Also with Mega Evolution came the introduction of the Fairy type which rebalanced the type charts for the first time since the Dark and Steel types were introduced back in the Gen 2. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

With 72 new Pokemon the Kalos Pokedex newly released with the smallest number the franchise had ever given with the newly released generation. This meant that the Game Freak team had to regress to including new regional Pokedex swelling, with 458 of the previously released Pokemon from the entirety of the original and all of the new sub-regions of the Kalos Central, Coastal, and Mountain. New Gen 6 Pokemon X and Y included a whole new multiplayer system with the Friend Safari, Wonder Trade, and Player Search System which were all firsts in the online system. Pokemon X and Y are a true modernization of the franchise as the Pokemon character models, animations, and battles all were on par with the visuals of other mainstream Japanese RPGs. The first fully 3D Pokemon games started the Pokemon visual style that remained until the more recent games, Scarlet and Violet.

Game Freak released Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald to introduce players to the Hoenn region along with Abilities, Natures, Double Battles, and Weather Mechanics. The Hoenn region was tropical in its design and featured dive routes, secret bases, and the Battle Frontier which came with post-game challenges. These games also introduced new species of Pokemon with the addition of 135 new characters to bring the total to 386 with the end of the third gen.

Abilities changed the way players approached each battle because now each Pokemon had its own unique effect. For example, Intimidate would make the opposing players Pokemon's attack decrease, and Levitate would make the Pokemon immune to ground-type moves. Natures also changed the game because they now offered 25 personality variations that would affect each Pokemon's growth. In double battles, players would play with two Pokemon on each side which introduced a new competitive format. Pokemon Emerald introduced The Battle Frontier which was a significant addition the franchise has not added to Hoenn. The third generation of Pokemon introduced the most changes to the franchise and competitive battling. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

Game Freak has been releasing titles for the Nintendo 3DS over the years, and in fifth place, we have Pokemon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon. These games became the first in the franchise to do away with a more traditional concept of battling Gym Leaders on 3DS consoles. Instead, the games feature the Alola Island Trials, inspired by real-life Hawaiian islands. The Alola Region consists of the Melemele, Akala, Ula'ula, and Poni Islands and each have Captain Trial challenges that require participants to do things such as take photos, dance, and battle. The games broke the mold that Pokemon have been following since the franchise started in 1996, where players would battle 8 gym leaders. The games also featured a storyline about the Aether Foundation that explained the underlying issues of corporate greed, as well as the Ultra Beast invasion, where players fight Totem Pokemon.

Also in this generation of games, the original 151 Pokemon (Generation 1 Pokémon) were given Alolan variants. Some even included new types. Examples include Alolan Vulpix which is now an Ice-type, Alolan Marowak which is Fire-Ghost, and Alolan Exeggutor who became a Grass-Dragon type. Another new mechanic introduced in this generation was called Z-Moves. Each Pokemon was given an ultimate once-per-battle move that could be used by the player using a Z-Crystal. Players would also be given a Z-Power Ring during battles to use as part of the combat system. The enhanced versions of the games, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, also included an expanded Alolan storyline, more Ultra Beasts, a large post-game fight with Rainbow Rocket, and the ability to travel to alternate dimensions and fight different Pokémon. All of these features in the Alola games marked a shift in storytelling from the traditional games in the series since Black and White. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

Taking the fourth place spot is Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow. These games started the Pokemon franchise with Game Freak's 1996-1998 Game Boy releases. They established a franchise template consisting of turn-based monster taming combat, gym challenges, Elite Four endgame, Pokemon Center healing systems, Pokemart buying systems, and link-cable trading. This created a social aspect to the game making it a multiplayer RPG. The first region, Kanto, started off the series with 151 creatures including the original Pikachu, Charizard, Mewtwo, Gengar, and Dragonite. 1998's Pokemon Yellow was an enhanced version of Yellow and added Pikachu as a permanent starter who followed the player in the overworld. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

The Game Boy's monochrome display and limited memory created design constraints for Pokemon Red and Blue including small overworld tiles, simple battle backgrounds, and a single-screen menu style that has remained with the franchise for thirty years. The original Pokedex consisting of only 151 creatures was the start to the franchise's "gotta catch 'em all" promise. The 2018 Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee Switch releases reinterpreted Pokemon Yellow and added Pokemon Go capture mechanics with an HD presentation. Pokemon Red and Blue are the original games that all of the other games rest on. The 1996 Game Boy games created the highest grossing media franchise in history and every other game still follows the formula set out by the Kanto 151 creatures.

The Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal series earns the number three spot as it is the only series that changes every single mechanical aspect of the franchise template Game Freak's 1999-2001 Game Boy Color releases with their competing brand releases. The Johto region is the first to include mythology-based geography such as Ecruteak City's Burned Tower Legendary beasts plot, the Ruins of Alph with their hieroglyphic puzzle, and the Sprout Tower training Pagoda. These are examples of town designs that advanced the worldbuilding of the franchise beyond Kanto's geographic minimalism. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

The day-night cycle introduced a real-time clock that would trigger certain events, such as certain Pokemon spawning and certain in-game events on specific days. Pokemon breeding was also introduced where compatible species could produce offspring that would inherit moves, IVs, and stat bonuses across generations. With the addition of berries we see the first healing mechanics made outside of Pokemon Centers. Held items provided combat options with damage-boosting items, status-resistance items and Eviolite-precursor items that affected stat growth. With the addition of Johto region's eight gyms and Kanto's eight returning gyms, Silver and Crystal provided a total of sixteen gym progressions that is unprecedented in the franchise. Pokemon Crystal 2000 enhanced version added the Suicune centric Eusine narrative thread, the Battle Tower which acts as a precursor to future post-game gauntlets plus was the first to provide a female protagonist option. Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal remain as the only series that provide the foundation for future evolutions of their genre.

Though the remakes of the Johto adventures, HeartGold and SoulSilver 2009, present the Johto adventure with a modern approach, the original Gen 2 trilogy captures the essence of its historical importance by being the first in the series to show the Pokemon franchise's ability to support mechanical reinvention and evolution of the genre.

The story of the Pokemon games Black/White and Black 2/White 2 are considered to be the franchise's peak, as it is the highest rated of Game Freak's releases for the Nintendo DS of 2010 through 2012. Located in the Unova region, Castelia City is designed to resemble America and is the most ambitious city in the franchise, featuring multiple districts, skyscrapers to traverse, as well as the Royal Unova cruise ship, an experience that no other previous generations had. The in-game Pokedex for this region is made up exclusively of new Gen 5 Pokemon and does not allow players to use any of the previous Gen 1-4 Pokemon as they are not unlocked until the player finishes the game. Other generations in the franchise have not made as strict post-game roster restrictions as this one. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

As the Champion-level antagonist of Team Plasma, N Harmonia is the most philosophically inclined villain in the franchise. N expresses that trainers of Pokemon are not any different than captors and that Pokemon should be freed from humans. The story of the games centers around this debate as N is encountered multiple times leading up to the Pokemon League finals where N battles the player with his partner Reshiram or Zekrom, creating a debate about the morality of capturing and training Pokemon. Two years after the original games were released, the Black 2 and White 2 games take players back to the Unova region but with newly added locations. In these games, the Pokemon World Tournament is introduced where players can battle gym leaders and champions from other games in the franchise, as well as a new Pokedex that organizes the Pokemon by habitat instead of by evolutionary line.

Black 2/White 2 are also the only sequels in the Pokemon main series that allow the player to revisit the same region directly continuing the story from the previous games. This is a design concept that has not been repeated in the franchise since.

HeartGold and SoulSilver is the peak of the Pokemon franchise and Game Freak's 2009 Nintendo DS remake of Gold and Silver. It has captured the peak of the mainline RPG catalogue by combining the dual-region Johto and Kanto adventures with every other refinement made to Pokemon in the last decade. This includes the generation 3 ability system, the physical/special split from generation 4, and the touch screen UI. As well as the very unique and innovative Pokewalker accessory that was included with the game cartridge.

The Pokewalker offered the player a portable device that would simulate daily Pokemon training. The accessory allowed one Pokemon to be transferred to the device and the player could earn Watts by walking in the real world. This would allow the player to redeem in-game items, rare Pokemon, and other event-species that were exclusive to the Pokewalker. Because of the inclusion of the accessory, HeartGold and SoulSilver allowed the player to have a companion Pokemon. The player could choose any of the 493 Pokemon in the game's regional Pokedex, and their overworld sprite would represent the Pokemon's size relative to the player. This was an improvement from the original Gen 2 games where only Pikachu could follow the player.

Two complete Pokemon adventures in a single DS cartridge is made possible by the dual-region progression.

Eight gyms in Johto lead to the Pokémon league at Indigo Plateau, and after that, Kanto's 8 gyms open up with new gym leaders three years older than their Gen 1 counterparts. The Mount Silver battle with Red, the first Gen 1 character and now the highest-level boss in the game, remains one of the best Pokémon battles setpieces in the series. The Safari Zone now has a new format to capture Pokémon, and the Pokeathlon includes mini-game competitions with your Pokémon. Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver are the best Pokémon games, giving players the chance to experience what Pokémon mainline RPG games are like at the peak of their quality after 30 years. Also, these games are a great way to start exploring the franchise. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

Honorable Mentions and Where to Start

While Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (2014) had Megas and great postgame content (Delta Episode), they still didn't nab a spot in the overall top ten. The same goes for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (2022) as they had such a flawed launch that they were disqualified for consideration. Pokemon BDSP were also disqualified during consideration as they did not surpass the original Platinum experience that earned it #8. Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee have also been disqualified as they aren't considered RPGs. See our Best Nintendo JRPGs of All Time for more Nintendo entries outside of Pokemon. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

For those who are new for the Pokemon franchise mainline RPGs coming in 2026, we would recommend starting from the Pokemon HeartGold or SoulSilver on Nintendo DS original cartridge or DS emulation, as the unique dual-region Johto and Kanto adventure certifies what the Pokemon franchise truly stands for at its peak. The narrative and gameplay peak for all Pokemon games is found in Pokemon Black 2 or White 2 on the Nintendo DS.

The most refined Distortion World playthrough is only possible through the enhanced version of the Sinnoh series on the Nintendo DS. Gen 4 enthusiasts receive exclusive Sinnoh post-game content. The Nintendo 3DS Pokemon Sun or Moon has the most modular Alola region with island separates and trials that replace gym battles. Pokemon Sword or Shield on Nintendo Switch has the most simplified, linear experience with the Wild Area offering zone exploration instead of closed corridors. The last three decades of video game design with a branded RPG has seen the Pokemon mainline catalog span Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo Switch.
