Starbites can be played on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam starting May 21, 2026, which means Starbites can now be played all over the world. Starbites is published by NIS America and Happinet. This title marks the earnest entry of IKINA GAMES into the western markets, 7 months after the Japanese release on October 16, 2025. Starbites is one of the most distinguished indie JRPG mult-platform releases of 2026, which makes the Switch 2 version delay and how it affects indie mult-platform releases post Switch 2 interesting.
With the launch announcement, we have information on platform availability, edition comparison guide, Switch 2 delay context, gameplay expectations, IKINA GAMES + NIS America publishing pipeline, and verdict from our existing deep-dive review. Our Starbites review, with a score of 7.5/10 and a detailed combat analysis, contains the most critical assessment of the game's quality. This review covers launch logistics and where to purchase the game.
The Multi-Platform Launch — PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, PC Steam Live Today
On May 21, 2026, the long wait for Starbites by NIS America will finally come to an end, as the game will be released on all four major gaming platforms. This includes PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam). NIS America will be releasing Starbites across all major platforms on the same date for all countries. This will be the first time NIS America will be releasing a mid-budget range game on every current-gen game console, and will also include a fully featured PC version, which is something they have never done before.
For the Steam version, as long as your device has the capability to run Steam, you can access the handheld Steam Deck as well. Handheld console gamers that enjoy JRPGs will find this as a good option. The PlayStation 5 version provides performance mode along with 60fps, which is good for those that would enjoy a high frame rate. The Xbox Series X versions are on par with playstation 5 with the same as Series S which adjusts the resolution for compatibility. Nintendo Switch players are limited to the original Switch console and its hardware which makes this version less appealing.
We created Starbites, and in doing so, we also created a buying guide for Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch that gives you a broad overview of all of the JRPG handhelds available.
Why the Switch 2 Version Is Delayed
The May 21 launch window does not include a Switch 2 version of Starbites. The upgraded Nintendo Switch 2 hardware was released in early 2026 and is capable of running more powerful games than the original Switch. Most JRPG games that can be bought on multiple platforms, even the ones that have recently come out, usually come out with a Switch 2 version at the same time. The delay on Starbites is the first time NIS America has gone against their usual strategy of multi-platform games which gives them no competition and shows no signs of changing that.
Being a smaller indie studio means that the development bandwidth for IKINA GAMES has to be more specific when it comes to choosing where they want their development resources to go. The previous build for the original Switch would have also taken some engineering work to get it to fit within the Switch's operational restrictions. It's possible that the studio has chosen to assign those resources to further development on the patches for the four current versions instead. He's also with a Switch 2 version, buyers of both consoles can run the original Switch version on the Switch 2. The backward compatibility does improve the game's performance, but it will still be limited to the original Switch's resolution and FPS.
The concerning question relates to indie JRPG releases up to and including 2026. Smaller developers target multiple platforms and have real budget considerations concerning Switch 2 native support. As such, the Starbites delay is one example of what data suggests other indie titles targeting a 2026 release will do. For Switch 2 owners contemplating a purchase, the answer is about how patient they are for native optimization versus wanting to play right away through backward compatibility.
Standard, Deluxe, Limited — Edition Comparison Guide
Starbites has three different editions for its games across its launching platforms. The Standard Edition will give you the base game for all four platforms, and the price is the same as any JRPG game, while the Digital Deluxe Edition has bonus digital content that you can get on the Steam store and PlayStation Network. The Limited Edition is for collectors with added physical merchandise along with the Deluxe Edition contents.
With the Digital Deluxe Edition, you typically receive goodies such as early access to the game, a downloadable soundtrack, a PDF of the art book, and some cosmetic content in the game to set you apart from those who didn't buy the items. Those who buy a lot of the Digital Deluxe editions from NIS America tend to get a lot of value from it.
The Limited Edition Physical Bundle gives collectors merchandise in addition to what is digital. Since the NIS America Limited Editions have items like little keychain figures, art books, soundtrack CDs, and themed packaging geared towards JRPG collectors, this is appealing to those who want physical items in the more digital gaming age. The Limited Edition usually sells out fast at various retailers, along with the NIS America store, especially in different regions, so if you want to get one, you should buy it quickly to avoid missing out.
Between the Standard and Limited Editions, the choice varies depending on the purpose of the collection. For those who keep tabs on what games they've bought digitally, the Standard or Digital Deluxe is probably fine, whereas those who want a physical JRPG collection will find the Limited Edition to be a justifiable price. Besides what Deluxe offers, the Limited Edition doesn't impact the gameplay.
What to Expect from the Game — Our Deep-Dive Verdict
There is no relevant evaluation of game quality in the launch announcement. This is where our existing editorial deep-dive gives practical buying decision context. Our Starbites review touches on the game's ten editorial dimensions, including the combat system of Driver's High, weakness mechanics of Octopath, character customization with skill trees and mech equipment, the visuals disparity of 2D portraits and 3D models, and opening hours pacing issues.
The verdict was a score of 7.5/10 for JRPG players willing to invest their time on the slow first act for meaningful combat depth and customization rewards in the mid-to-late game. The Driver's High combat system introduces real tactical decisions regarding damage windows, synergy between party members, and the free respec system promotes experimentation throughout the campaign which spans 30-40 hours without imposing a single-build restriction. Mech equipment customization adds another strategic layer that further differentiates Starbites from the other run-of-the-mill turn-based JRPGs that rely purely on stat optimization.
The criticisms are valid and should be accepted before the purchase. The story does take time to gain momentum during the beginning hours, the 3D character models are technically inferior to the quality of the 2D portrait art, and the mid-game difficulty is inadequate for JRPG veterans looking for a challenge at the default settings. None of these issues are dealbreakers and should be cited in any launch recommendations. Starbites will appeal to players who enjoy Octopath Traveler combat depth and are aware of the indie JRPG production quality, and will be worth the time investment in the less rewarding opening hours.
IKINA GAMES + NIS America — Indie Multi-Platform Pipeline Context
As a relatively newer studio, IKINA GAMES has notable partnerships with Western publishers, showcasing a growing trend of Japanese studios collaborating with bigger Western publishers. An example of this is NIS America, who has established a reliable mid-tier publishing pipeline for JRPGs, such as the Disgaea series, Trails through Daybreak II, which is featured in our Steam Deck buying guide, as well as the localizations of Falcom and Idea Factory, which have seen very little distribution in the West.
The collaboration with Happinet for co-publishing has allowed for the Japanese market and the development funding framework to finalize polish for the Starbites. This type of funding is becoming more critical for smaller indie JRPG studios. The finished product helps to meet the bandwidth needs of the studio while also providing content to the partnered publisher to diversify their offerings.
The presence of a publisher is crucial to filtering the audience for JRPGs. Many players who enjoy the NIS America titles and the Disgaea and Trails series value the publisher’s track record. Others, who may not be familiar with the games published by NIS America, can use Starbites as an entry point to the wider catalogue of games published by NIS America. What to Play While You Wait for Switch 2 Port
Plenty of new JRPGs are set to come out in the next few months, giving Switch 2 owners more titles to play while still waiting for native Switch 2 builds. Starbites has noted the use of 'Weakness Mechanic' in Octopath Traveler II, so they should appreciate the HD-2D experience that the Switch version of this title will provide, especially with its performance scaling for the hardware.
The Switch runs Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes exceptionally well as it is designed for short, hand-held play sessions and is an analog/visual representation of a classic, Suikoden-style JRPG with multiple playable characters. Trails through Daybreak II is a good JRPG for beginners as it is entry-friendly and provides coverage of the Falcom hybrid action-JRPG combat that captures a different functional perspective of Starbites' Driver's High system. Beginner-friendly JRPGs can also be found in our guide, and it spans the canon of JRPGs and should suffice those looking to play it, assuming they want to keep with the genre.

Where to Buy and Regional Availability Notes
Starbites is now available on the PlayStation Network for PS5, Steam for Windows PC, Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch, and the Microsoft Store for Xbox Series. The Digital Deluxe Edition on Steam includes the premium priced bonus content tier. The Limited Edition physical bundle can only be purchased at select stores and the NIS America online store, which has a limited allocation depending on the region.
As players in Japan have had access to this game since October 16, 2025, using Japanese eShop accounts or importing a physical disc may be known to those who collect imports. To the English-speaking JRPG audience, the Western release on May 21, 2026, will eliminate the wait. In most cases, PS5 and Switch have physical copies available at large retailers for disc purchase; while Xbox Series and PC versions remain digital.
